I love old sayings.,…mostly because there is so much truth in them.
According to Wikipedia, The Devil Is In The Details originated from God Is In The Details. Not sure how God morphed into the devil….but none the less, here is Wikipedias definition:
“The devil is in the detail” is an idiom that refers to a catch or mysterious element hidden in the details,[1] meaning that something might seem simple at a first look but will take more time and effort to complete than expected [2] and derives from the earlier phrase, “God is in the detail” expressing the idea that whatever one does should be done thoroughly; i.e. details are important
….whatever one does should be done thoroughly…details are important
Powerful words as you are about to start a new school year! To me, thats where your effort needs to be as you prepare….in the details. Details of what youre going to say to your kids on that first day, details of what your workouts are going to accomplish, details of what your drills are going to accomplish, details, details, details….
Its not enough to know what you want to get done, you have to know the details of how you are going to get it done,
You have spent the summer looking at new ideas and new drills. My advice is to make sure you know the exact details of what you are trying to accomplish with those drills……there is a huge difference between running a drill and coaching a drill!
You get to a point in the season where things just arent going like youd want…..take an honest look at what youre doing in practice. Are you just running thru things for the sake of activity….or are you coaching the details.of what you want to accomplish? Does your practice have style (everybody looks like they are doing something or going hard) or does it have substance (the kids are going hard, but learning the game and exactly what you want them to do?). Successful teams and great coaches do a great job of balancing both style and substance by paying attention to details.…..after all, the devil is in the details!!
